The view from the car: somewhere up there, the gully terminates into what we hope is a fun ice climb. We came here because the approach sounded quick and easy in the book, but it is apparent that that will not be the case. Still, we drove an hour on snowy roads--we're here, so we have to check it out. This is the "adventure" part of the trip.

Early Sunday morning, we left the Castle Mountain hostel to find some ice on the Icefields Parkway. After a bit of snow coming down, the weather has improved. The area is beautiful--we're parked by a big frozen lake, and there is fresh snow everywhere.

Morning light as we hike up. I was cursing the approach--very steep, with only a little (6-8") powdery snow covering an incredibly loose, rocky slope. As Brent said, something you would never, never climb in the summertime.

Here's where our route should have been. Too bad we couldn't see it from the road; we saw the upper part of the pitch, but weren't able to see that the ice doesn't touch down. Because the climb is "hidden" by its position, we had to hike all the way up to see the base.

Having been frustrated on our first attempt to find ice this day (Sunday), we headed to Johnson Canyon, a sure bet--near the hostel and an easy 1.5 mi. approach. It was my first time on this boardwalk, which was really fun--most of the way it is bolted into the narrow rock walls of the canyon, suspended above the icy creek below. (Apologies for the out-of-order pictures here; I'm not sure why that is happening)
